The Gross Side of Unwashed Linens: Critters, Germs, & More

Oct 22, 2024 | Laundry Tips

When was the last time you washed your family’s bedding (linens)? A week? A month? More than a month? It’s gross to think about, but did you know when you neglect washing your linens for lengthy periods of time you allow buildup and even dust mites to sleep with you.

Buildup contains dead skin cells, oils, dust, saliva and other bodily fluids, dirt, etc. and all that accumulates on your sheets night after night. That buildup gets into your mattress and is food for dust mites. Dust mites are microscopic pests that thrive in mattresses and bedding, but also in other places throughout your home.

In order to keep dust mites at bay or to decrease their population in your bedding, is to wash your bedding often. The more active you are in life, will require more washing. For example, someone who works in an office setting may not need to wash bedding as often as as someone who works outside all day in the heat or works in a field where getting dirty is unavoidable. Pay attention to the care label instructions too.
